Total amount of household waste generated in the Helsinki metropolitan area by type of waste and recycling rate of household waste

Data contains information on the total amount of household waste generated in the Helsinki metropolitan area in 2004–2010 using the old calculation method, and on the total amount of household waste and the recycling rate for 2012–2022. The amount of household waste is reported in tonnes and kg/resident.

Household waste means consumer waste from households. Household waste does not include waste generated outside the home or its domain even though generated by the household (such as waste oils left at a service station in connection with an oil change). In addition, household waste does not include non-municipal waste from the household (such as scrap vehicles and construction and demolition waste).

The total amount of household waste includes

  • Mixed waste (collected from residential properties and delivered to Sortti Stations)
  • Paper (producer responsibility statistics)
  • Biowaste (home-composted amount collected from residential properties)
  • Cardboard and carton (collected from residential properties and regional collection points)
  • Glass (collected from residential properties and regional collection points, as well as deposit packages)
  • Metal (collected from residential properties and regional collection points, delivered to Sortti Stations, as well as deposit packages)
  • Hazardous waste (hazardous waste reception points)
  • Wood (delivered to Sortti Stations)
  • Garden waste (delivered to Sortti Stations)
  • Electric and electronic equipment (producer responsibility statistics)
  • Textile waste (delivered to Sortti Stations)
  • Other waste
