This dataset is associated with the dynamic report titled School transport subsidy: Number of recipients and subsidies paid out, which is part of the Kelasto statistical database.
The dataset includes data on recipients of school transport subsidy and on the subsidies paid out per calendar year, per academic year and per month. The academic year starts at the beginning of August and ends at the end of July the following year. Annual data are available from 2008 onwards, monthly data from 2017 onwards and data per academic year from 2009/2010 onwards.
Persons who have been paid school transport subsidy in an amount higher than zero during the reference period are counted as recipients of school transport subsidy. The data have been compiled based on the date of payment of the subsidy. For example, many are granted school transport subsidy for August, but most of the school transport subsidy granted for August will not be paid out until September, because ticket vendors charge Kela for the school transport subsidy one month after the ticket was sold. There is a retrospective application period of one month for school transport subsidy. This means that a student may be granted school transport subsidy for both August and September in September, in which case the subsidy for August will be paid out simultaneously with the subsidy for September.
The dataset is broken down by gender, age, municipality of residence, category of education institution and mode of transport. Data on modes of transport and category of educational institution are available from 2009. Since August 2021, the data can also be broken down by whether the education or training is free of charge, by the number of days of travel and by the length of the one-way journey.
The recipient’s age and municipality of residence correspond to the situation at the end of the selected time period. In the academic-year data, however, the age and municipality of residence correspond to the situation at the end of the autumn term.
