Data contains information on municipal waste generated in the Helsinki metropolitan area (households, private services, public services excl. sewer and wastewater management) and municipal waste treatment methods by sector in 2012–2022. The amount of waste is reported in tonnes and kg/resident, and the treatment methods in tonnes and percentages.
Municipal waste is waste generated in households and waste comparable to household waste generated in the administrative, commercial and service sectors. The general common feature of municipal waste is that it is generated in the consumption of final products in communities.
The estimates of waste volumes for private and public services are based on annual waste reports. Waste reports are collected from a few hundred companies/organisations and the data is generalised to cover the entire Helsinki metropolitan area using personnel statistics. The sample of organisations varies from year to year and the data is based on the organisations’ own reports, which may lead to fluctuating volume estimates and uncertainty.
